Gorgeous day; gorgeous
gardens.......what a wonderful way to spend
a summer day. Those who took advantage
of this tour were treated to views of many
various styles of gardens. Our local
gardeners demonstrated their talents in the
beautiful areas they opened to the public
for viewing.
The gardens were viewed
by enthusiastic garden-lovers young and old.
They were open from 9:30 to
1:30. We
provided the map of ten (four in one spot) gardens and you toured at your leisure.
There was also a fantastic raffle of plants
and garden things—a chance to win close to
forty different prizes with little investment,
including original paintings, garden themed
sweaters, gift cards and dozens of plants!
A great
Thank You to all the garden hosts.

Raised Garden Full of Beds
The storybook entry garden gives way to a
sweeping expanse of mature trees, mixed
borders, raised beds and rock garden. Cheri
challenges herself to plant interesting
compositions with season-long color, but to
also do so sustainably.
Urban Oasis Garden
Eye-catching arbors and colorful plantings,
this garden provides daily pleasure for its
many passers-by. A tiered fountain and pond
highlight the interior, creating a soothing
retreat for family and friends. Thirty-year
gardener, Gustavo observes, “My garden is
like a puzzle. There is always something you
can add or change. It pleases me that it’s a
work in progress. You never finish a garden
completely.”
Four in One Gardens
Front Gardens punctuate this stretch of the
boulevard with open invitations to stop and
admire. But, it’s what’s ‘out-back’ that is
truly arresting: Four unique gardens with
shared views, the whole even greater than
the sum of its parts.
Garden 1 - “In 1969, I sprinkled some seeds
from a ‘Welcome to Wildwood’ basket. They
grew and I was hooked.” Gardening in Zion
for the past 20 years, Barbara has planted
hundreds of perennials including ferns,
astible, bleeding hearts, ajuga, spiderwort
and bulbs.
Garden 2 – Helen began gardening in 1962.
She credits her mother for inspiration.
After 19 years at this address, her country
shade garden continues to expand with
daylilies, colorful shade plants, ground
covers and roses. The enchanting footbridge
and favorite reading spot tucked into a
distant clearing beg a stroll along its
winding paths.
Garden 3 - Though their home is for sale,
this couple has graciously invited us to
walk through the garden enjoying her link
with their neighbors east and west.
Garden 4 – A desire to create a welcoming
outdoor space with cottage garden appeal and
‘shabby chic’ comfort led Darlene to pick up
a trowel. “I don’t consider myself a
gardener, but I love flowers and fill my
garden with as many as our budget allows."
Wasted No More Garden
From ‘wasted space’ to ‘wow’ in four short
years –here’s Georgetta’s story! “I began
planting flowers, shrubs, fruit trees,
having fun and moving plants around. Then I
realized I needed to learn about their
necessities – soil, water and fertilizer.
Today the garden with its water feature and
bright colors reflects my personality, the
vegetable garden provides much pleasure.”
Charming
Outdoor Garden
All the ingredients for summer pleasure have
been artfully combined in this charming
outdoor space. With the swimming pool as
centerpiece, Diane has tucked annual amid
perennial to guarantee eye-pleasing color.
“I love to sit on my screened porch to enjoy
the view of all my flowers and smell the
fragrance of the blooming trees and shrubs.”
Rolling Ravine Woodland Garden
Against a
wooded backdrop of rolling ravine, this
garden mixes old and new to stunning effect.
Plants from Debbie’s parents and a pathway
of 90-year old bricks lend patina. Debbie
says, “I spend hours here. It’s so peaceful.
I love mixing lots of different plants,
especially the old-fashioned varieties. I
like bringing cut flowers inside.”
